Business and Enterprise and French
Welcome to Business and Enterprise at Freebrough Academy
Business and Enterprise is the specialism within the academy and we see this playing an integral part in the future success of our students. Through studying Business and Enterprise students will develop skills such as teamwork, creativity, risk management and decision making. These skills together with the more traditional subjects will ensure our students are best equipped to succeed in their chosen career. All students within the academy will have the opportunity to undertake different programmes of study under the Business and Enterprise umbrella.
Business and Enterprise also encompasses Modern Foreign Languages.

Business and Enterprise
In KS3 students will look at the actual enterprise skills and be introduced to the world of business through an exciting and engaging curriculum. This will include talks and visits to local businesses as well as exciting hands on activities to develop their own enterprise skills.
In KS4 the students embark on their BTEC first in Business. Through this curriculum they look more in depth into the world of business and cover topics such as financial forecasting, business purposes and working in business teams. This course will also include visits and talks from local and national organisations.
Alongside the curriculum for Business and Enterprise runs the enrichment programme.
Enterprise Club – This is a club for all year groups. The students who attend this club have taken part in a number of local and national challenges to develop their enterprise skills.
Zenny Zeebrough’s Smoothie Café – This is the first student run business in the Academy. The business is open at lunchtime and offers smoothies and milkshakes to both students and staff. The students who run the business each have a role which was chosen according to their individual skills. Students are responsible for all aspects of the business including finances, marketing and production.
More enrichment coming soon………..
Project based learning
In KS3 students also follow a programme entitled project based learning. In this curriculum students will study a number of exciting topics which incorporate all aspects of teaching and learning. Students will work together and individually on creative projects which will see them use all of their enterprise skills to develop products and performances relating to specific subjects. This curriculum helps students to examine and analyse their emotional, social and behavioural skills alongside the enterprise skills.
Business and Enterprise Event
As part of our academy specialism, business and enterprise, we are holding six one business and enterprise events across the academic year. Each event will develop an enterprising culture, allow students to build entrepreneurial skills whilst developing the students ‘can do’ attitude.
In the last academic year we held our first business and enterprise event, which resulted in the development of our academy mascot for business and enterprise, Zenny Zeebrough. Zenny was designed by a group of students who varied in age and covered all year groups. This mascot is now being used to help us to showcase business and enterprise throughout the academy and further! This event saw students develop their creativity, risk taking, presentation and communication skills amongst others as each tutor group had to choose a winning mascot to put forward to the final. Students produced posters, songs and poems highlighting why they had chosen their mascot and the thinking behind its development, they presented it to their peers and the finalists to a panel of judges. At the end of the day students were asked for their thoughts on the day and the activities. Many students felt the day had helped the develop skills such as self-confidence, creativity and teamwork and many forged friendships with others in their tutor group whom they may not have talked to before and which have had a huge impact in their daily life at the Academy.
We are planning to hold our first whole school Business and Enterprise event of the new academic year on Thursday 13 October. The day will see all the students working in their tutor groups looking at the issue of bullying and its effects in an enterprising context to coincide with national anti-bullying week. Alongside raising their awareness of the issue of bullying, the day will help the students develop their business and enterprise skills including, business awareness, financial capability, problem solving, creativity, self-confidence and teamwork. This does mean the normal curriculum will be collapsed for the day although the timings of the day will remain the same. Throughout the day students will work in teams in their tutor groups looking at the different types of bullying and taking part in an enterprise challenge around bullying in the afternoon resulting in them making a physical product and having a slot on Zenny Zeebrough’s catwalk.
We feel as an academy that these days are invaluable in preparing our students for life at and after Freebrough no matter what career choice the student embarks on. Many employers have stated that although students have many of the qualifications needed for employment in their business they lack the business and enterprise skills which make them the ideal employee and having these skills alongside the qualifications puts them ahead of the rest.
If you require any further information on the business and enterprise days please contact our Director for Learning Business and Enterprise, Mrs Rich.
Freebrough Enterprise Mascot
Students from Freebrough Academy had an exciting change from their normal timetable on 3rd and 4th March when they were given a mission to complete in their tutor groups. The students had just less than two days to come up with an exciting and creative idea to represent enterprise in the academy.
Throughout the 2 days they were taken on a journey which saw them work in small, mixed year group teams to plan, design and develop a mascot and poster to represent enterprise skills.
The students developed their own enterprising skills along the way including problem solving, leadership, creativity, decision making and, of course, teamwork. Three entries were produced by each tutor group, which had to be whittled down to just 1 to go forward for judging. Five entries reached the shortlist which was compiled by the academy’s Business and Enterprise team. They were: John the Jelly baby, Zenny the Zeebrough, Determine ‘D’ Turtle, Danny Dinosaur and Enterprise Owl. These teams will now face the gruelling task of going in front of a panel of judges to sell their idea.
After a long and difficult deliberation period the judges awarded first prize to the students who created Zenny the Zeebrough. This team of students will now see their ideas become reality as their creation is developed to front the Business and Enterprise specialism within the academy. They will also receive a limo ride around their home towns as a reward for their hard work.
How our students feel about Business and Enterprise:
“I would like to do more enterprise activities as they are really fun and entertaining”.
“Enterprise brings the tutor group together and builds the team”.
“It was a good way to spend 2 days and our tutor got to know us better”.
“I like coming up with new ideas”
