What We Study in Year 9 Humanities

Integrated Humanities: Key Steps

Some students will continue the programme of Integrated Humanities into Year 9. This is delivered through the Key Steps Programme. This enables students to gain accreditation for their learning and progress. There is a real focus on the wider key skills of written and oral communication, numeracy, literacy, problem solving and ICT.  Students will complete unit challenges on the following topics.

-Values
-Identity
-Citizenship
-Enterprise
-International
-Health

There is a real focus on continuing opportunities to engage with outside speakers and visits outside the classroom. Students feed into the wider big experiences planned in year 9 these include visiting London and York Minster, as well as the 50hr volunteering challenge.

Separate Humanities

The majority of students will study 4 separate humanities courses in year 9. This enables students to prepare for GCSE and BTEC options at level 2. Using the key skills from years 7 and 8 students are given the opportunity to develop and apply these to subject specific issues and topics. The use of separate courses enables depth of study and is lead by subject specific teachers. The idea of extended learning continues into year 9 alongside opportunities for a ‘Big Experience’!

Geography

During year 9 students use a combination of wider key skills alongside geographical ones. There is a focus on the use of case studies and sustainability. The Geography course covers the following units:

-Environmental Impacts
-Tectonics
-Development
-Disease and AIDS
-Tourism

 

History

During year 9 students will focus on evaluating historical sources, analysing the causes of events and developing explanations for different interpretations of the past. The History course covers the following units:

-The start of modern Britain
-The Great War
-Making the peace?
-The Home Front
-Terrorism
-Brave New World

RE

During year 9 students focus on reflecting,empathizing and showing understanding of key questions.They are involved in looking at the topics of Jesus in Art and Music, Death including abortion and euthanasia, Believing in God and Marriage and the family.

 

PSHCE

This course covers elements of personal, social, health and citizenship education. Developing skills in students to take responsibility and promote self esteem. The following units are studied:

-Relationships Education
-Governance
-Guidance (including careers)
-Democracy
-All Change! (active citizenship)
-Drugs
